MY YOUNG SON, the one with one speed (full speed ahead!), surprised his mother one day by walking in with three friends of similar spirit who made, in unison, one request they wanted to be taken to the courthouse.
An interesting request, my wife thought, but a bit out of the ordinary. She was aware that the boys had been working on their clubhouse and, due to what they considered to be an incursion into their territory, were even considering relocating their establishment. But...
“Why, pray tell, do you need to go to the courthouse?”
The answer rang back from the ambitious quartet of fledgling but feisty entrepreneurs: “Because we want to buy land for our new clubhouse!”
Their procedure and reasoning were impeccable. They were having trouble with what they considered to be trespassing, but, to be strictly accurate, it could hardly be called trespassing since they themselves were “squatters” on land they did not own.
Undaunted, the boys had scouted out a new location on prime (for clubhouse purposes) property. But this time, they fully intended to own it along with full legal right to post “no trespassing” notices!
Now, to buy land, they reasoned, you have to know who owns it. To know who owns it, you go to the courthouse. 100% logical.
I was quite impressed with both their logic and their entrepreneurial style! At this rate, in ten years or so, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the firm of Denney, Pool, Riley & Shelburne undertake a leveraged “buy-out” of Microsoft! In the present, however, taking care to keep the group’s enthusiasm intact, their smiling parents felt the need to point out the boys’ “cash-poor” condition.
Short of cash. But not short of dreams. That’s a better combination than the other way around.
God, give us leaders with the courage to dream dreams! Leaders with the vision to see beyond what is and what has been to the glorious dawning of what might be!
Lord, make us as wise as our children.
