It’s Tuesday, Lord, and we’re involved once more in the day-to-day
business of running a city.
Today we’ve got land to zone and
parking to restrict,
public improvements to authorize and
a raft of contracts to let.
Running a city, even a small one like ours, can be a task too
complex for any one of us to handle.
So we stand in awe, Lord, when we realize that all alone each day
You face the task of running a world.
While we worry today about chlorine for a few swimming pools,
You must supply hydrogen and oxygen and a jillion trace
minerals for the oceans of the world.
While we procure furnishings for a few dozen offices, You are
busy outfitting umpteen valleys and a multitude of hills.
While we budget funds to help a handful of families buy homes,
You must plan nests and dens and corals and caves to house
the multiplied creatures that swim the seas and roam the
earth.
You do all of this so effortlessly, and You do it so well.
Compared to running a world, Lord, running our city looks like a rather puny assignment, but it’s about all we can handle.
Thank You for the talented people who make our town run right.
Bless all of us, Lord, that our own best efforts may be enhanced
by Your incredible wisdom and grace.
Through Christ. Amen.
