Speed Bumps

by Gene Shelburne

Today they are discretely hidden on the agenda, Lord,

but You know how much time we’ve spent here in recent

weeks discussing speed bumps and speed humps.

Most of us aren’t too excited about them, Lord, but for some

good people in our city they’re the hottest topic in town.

Their mission in life right now is to slow down their neighbors.

You know only too well, Lord, that we need somebody

                                    to slow us down.

Summer came.         The traditional time to “take it easy.”

But this year, Lord, many of us shifted into a higher gear.

                                                Running. Straining. Dashing. Hurrying.

Trying so hard to keep up.

                        We need speed bumps, Lord.

                                    In our work days.

                                    On our calendars.

To make us slow our pace and enjoy living.

Thank You, Lord, for city leaders who willingly accelerate their

own pace to serve the rest of us.

In Your grace may they find peace.

In Your Spirit may they find strength.

In Your purposes may they find serenity.

May the speed bumps in their lives be gentle ones.

This prayer we offer through Him

Who came to give us rest. Amen.
